Mullins effect

The Mullins effect material model provided in Abaqus is intended for modeling the phenomenon of stress softening, commonly observed in filled rubber elastomers as a result of damage associated with straining.

When an elastomeric test specimen is subjected to simple tension from its virgin state, unloaded, and then reloaded, the stress required on reloading is less than that on the initial loading for stretches up to the maximum stretch achieved during the initial loading. This stress-softening phenomenon is known as the Mullins effect (Mullins, 1947).
